This historical essay is the text of the first of the annual lecture series of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia. It recounts the eight month long stay of Louis IX, king of France, in Cyprus in 1248/1249 prior to the Seventh Crusade. The significance of Cyprus for the crusade and the political background are outlined.

This essay presents the archaeological and historical evidence for the settlement of the Nicosia area. Nicosia is the oldest continuously inhabited place in Cyprus with a history going back to the Chalcolithic period. This continuity of settlement contrasts with discontinuity visible elsewhere, and possible reasons for this are examined.

The theme of this essay is the development of Nicosia in Lusignan and Venetian times. Contemporary descriptions give a vivid idea of the aristocratic way of life, but apart from one or two prominent buildings, the physical remains of the mediaeval city have largely disappeared. Venetian documentary sources are used to help in the reconstruction of the salient aspects of the Lusignan city.

The Venetian fortifications of Nicosia are examined in this essay against the background of the development of European fortifications in general. The transformation of Nicosia from Lusignan walled city to Venetian fortress is documented, and subsequent examples of fortifications are illustrated following the Nicosia stellar prototype. Consideration is also given to the fortifications of Famagusta.
