The volume begins with notes on Anastasios Leventis and the A. G. Leventis Foundation by C. Leventis. A brief history of modern Greek painting seen through the A. G. Leventis collection is followed by a catalogue of 181 paintings ranging in date from a painting attributed to Spyridon Ventouras ( 1761-1835) to a final painting by Yannis Tsarouhis ( 1910-1989). The volume reveals the variety of styles and themes characteristic of modern Greek art. Foreign influences and traditions, as well as historical events with their social and cultural consequences, all contributed to this diversity of artistic vocabulary.
