Considerable numbers of Cypriot antiquities are housed in the various provincial museums in France and in several lesser known museums in Paris. The purpose of this volume is to collect all of these together to make them more readily available for study. Major collections of Cypriot material such as those in the Musée du Louvre and several of the most important national museums are not included. Most of the volume is devoted to a detailed catalogue of objects listed under the heading of the towns (45 in all) in which they are located. The artifacts are essentially ceramics, limestone sculptures of varying size, heads of statues and figurines of terracotta, glass objects andjewels. Bronze objects are rare. The chronological range is from the Bronze Age (EC III) to the Roman period. The majority of the objects were acquired in the second half of the l9th century. Quantities in individual collections vary from one sherd of a White Slip bowl in Calais to 185 objects in the Musée d'Archéologie, Château Borély in Marseille. Notes are included, where known, on the origin of the various artifacts and the history of the collections. Preface by Marguerite Yon. Index of objects by type and index of proper names.
THE POTTERS' ART OF ANCIENT CYPRUS 22 x 29.5cm 173 + 35pp. numerous illustrations in colour Published by the Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv and the A.G. Leventis Foundation Languages: English and Hebrew Paperback $28.60 / £C13.00 |
The Cypriote ceramics collection comprises more than 400 ceramic vessels and figurines gathered together by the late Dr. Walter Moses; the majority were purchased in Cyprus, but some were also bought in Israel. Although the collection inevitably testifies to the taste of its owner, it includes many characteristic groups of vessels which represent the principal styles prevalent throughout the island. Following brief introductions to the history of the Museum's Cypriote collection (by Olenik) and the archaeology of Cyprus in its Mediterranean context (by Karageorghis), the main part of this volume comprises a catalogue of 102 objects, predominantly ceramic but with a few terracotta human and animal figurines and several votive masks. For each object the chronological period, inventory number and dimensions are followed by a full description (in English and Hebrew) including references to previous publications. Each object is also illustrated with a colour photograph, either individually or in a small group. The chronological range of the objects begins with the Early Bronze Age/Middle Bronze Age (ECIII-MCI) and continues through the Classical and Hellenistic periods. One sgraffto ware vessel of the l4th century A.D. is also included. A chronological table, map of sites and bibliography complete the volume.

Karageorghis provides an overview of one hundred years of Cypriot archaeology, followed by chapters on the goddess Aphrodite (after Jacqueline Karageorghis) and on various aspects of modern Cyprus. There follows a lengthy outline of the history and culture of Cyprus from the Neolithic through post-Roman times. Webb contributes a chapter on ideology and ritual from the earliest times to the Classical period, and this is followed by a 45 page catalogue of the 308 items in the exhibition which range in date from the Aceramic Neolithic to the Late Roman period. Many of the artifacts were loaned by the Cyprus Museum, Nicosia, and other district museums in Cyprus; others were obtained from collections in Europe and the USA. The volume ends with a brief bibliography.

This essay was originally published in the Proceedings of the British Academy 33, 1948. This revised edition of Beazley's text follows the original with minor alterations introduced to aid the reader. Twenty fve Athenian black-figure, red-fgure and white-ground vases in the Cyprus Museum are catalogued. The value of the publication lies in Beazley's often lengthy discussions on shape, technique, style, and subject which are as informative now as they were in 1948.
