General

The conservation department of the Benaki Museum, founded in 1974, currently comprises of six laboratories specialized in the conservation of icons and oil paintings, paper, textiles, ceramics, metalwork, as well as large scale objects such as wood carvings, wallpaintings and mosaics.

The departments main activity is the technical examination and practical treatment (conservation and restoration) of the various artifacts of the museum’s collections, as well as the prevention of any further deterioration of their condition by controlling the environmental conditions in the exhibition and storage rooms.
Each artifact is carefully documented; all information regarding its technology, state of preservation and conservation treatment are kept in detailed records, ensuring easy access to all data.

In recent years, growin area of the departments activities is the technical examination on artifacts, regarding their structure, materials and state of preservation. This is established either in the department, with the application of specialized photographic techniques, x-raying and careful observation through optical microscopy, or with the implementation of physicochemical analytical techniques, in collaboration with external research and educational institutions.

By its participation in research programs of the E. U., the department aims towards the better understanding of the structure and the technology of the various artifacts, the improvement of the materials and the techniques applied during conservation procedures, the gradual renewal of the departments equipment, as well as the collaboration with institutions bearing common interests and goals.

Services
